Gruta do Galo
This dive, known as Gruta do Galo (Rooster Cave), is held in a cavern connected to the surface. It has depths ranging between 12 and 15 metres and is therefore accessible to all divers.
This is one of the most iconic dive sites on the island of Flores. A cavern provides a unique Z-shaped backlight, but it also features a freshwater waterfall that drops directly into the sea a few metres from the entrance to the cavern, allowing you to start and end the dive under a natural waterfall.
Inside the cavern, you will often find large common stingrays (Dasyatis pastinaca) on the sandy seafloor, along with schools of small fish in the water column. This creates a unique effect with a brilliant blue as the backdrop.
Leaving the cave, depth increases to 25 metres and you can find a large cavern with two entrances that are almost always occupied by a school of large white trevallies (Pseudocaranx dentex).
Shy dusky groupers (Epinephelus marginatus) often lurk nearby, as well as several species of moray eels.
