Depth
Calheta do Lagador
This is a sheltered site, its low depth making it accessible to snorkellers and divers of any experience. The Calheta do Lagador is accessed directly from the coast, with an entrance from the Biscoitos swimming area located on the north coast of Terceira Island.
Given that this is a four metre deep natural bay, it is a breeding ground for many fish species. There are an incredible number of young fish, including small dusky groupers (Epinephelus marginatus), parrotfish (Sparisoma cretense), common two-banded seabreams (Diplodus vulgaris) and schools of small fish in the water column such as yellowmouth barracudas (Sphyraena viridensis).
Throughout the whole dive you are likely to spot common octopuses (Octopus vulgaris) and several species of moray eels, both hiding amid the rock formations. As you continue to dive deeper, these crevices become much smaller, 12-14 metre deep ravines. From here divers may opt to go north, getting away from the coast to a depth of up to 18 metres to spot schools of pelagic fish such as Almaco jacks (Seriola rivoliana) and yellowmouth barracudas, or you may head east, following the coastline amidst a small maze of ravines.
