Gruta Azul

Located in a small sheltered bay on the east coast of Santa Maria, near the Bay of São Lourenço, the Cave Azul (Blue Cave) is one of the most interesting cave dives of this island. It features 3 different exits, allowing for some interesting circuits, and a wide variety of settings throughout the 150 metres of stone corridors. There are excellent light effects providing the perfect environment for photography.

With a maximum depth of only 17 metres it allows for long dives. You can see large common stingrays (Dasyatis pastinaca) on the sandy seafloor or in the narrow corridors, as well as various types of colourful sponges and small nudibranchs adorning the walls. With calm sea you can exit at the tip of the bay in open water and return via the exterior.
